Outfits you can build

180

Every combination of one top, one bottom, and one pair of shoes — with or without a layer of outerwear. Adding one piece of shoes now would unlock 60 more.

Useful when you want to show someone the arithmetic.

The numbers stay in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.

What the number tells you

A wardrobe of five tops, four bottoms, three pairs of shoes, and two jackets can make 180 distinct outfits. The reason it feels like three is not a shortage of clothes — it is that those outfits are never planned, so the same ones get reached for under time pressure.

The second thing the number shows is where the bottleneck is. Adding to the smallest category multiplies the whole wardrobe; adding to a large category only adds a row. That is the arithmetic behind capsule advice, without the guesswork.

What to do with it

  1. Count what you actually wear, not everything you own. The pieces in the back of the closet are not part of the calculation.
  2. Note the limiting category before you shop. If shoes are the bottleneck, one pair buys more outfits than another jacket.
  3. Then plan a week from the wardrobe, and check the outfits you are unsure about before you wear them. Combinations on paper are only useful when they work in daylight.
